Aims and Objectives
The funds and a brief summary of their original purposes, are as follows:
Needham Market and Barking Almshouse Charity:
- to maintain the Alexander and Maws Almshouses, each comprising two flats. The original Almshouses have been sold and new Almshouses have been built comprising four flats in total, two with one bedroom and two with two bedrooms. This was achieved as a joint project with Orwell Housing Association by whom the new Almshouses are operated and managed as part of the Drift Court Sheltered Housing complex. The trustees retain Nomination Rights to the new flats, the occupants of which have full access to the other facilities of Drift Court. The new flats are of incomparably higher standard than the old flats, and during a monitoring visit the national Association of Almshouses representatives expressed themselves delighted with the project.
Town Lands Trust:
- firstly, to relieve generally or individually need, hardship or distress by the provision of grants or facilities - secondly, to provide relief for old age or sickness, and thirdly, to use the balance of income for such charitable purposes for the benefit of the communities of Needham Market and Barking as the Trustees think fit. The objectives of the Crowley and Others Trust which were to provide assistance, not readily available from other sources, to and for sick, convalescent, handicapped or infirm people have been incorporated within those of the Town Lands Trust.
Both funds are for the benefit of the inhabitants of the Parishes of Needham Market and of Barking.
Management
The Charities are managed by a committee of Trustees, of whom three are nominated by Needham Market Town Council, two by Barking Parish Council and six are co-opted, with the assistance of a part time clerk.
When a vacancy occurs for a co-opted Trustee the remaining Trustees seek to appoint an individual with skills and experience which they feel will be of benefit to the Charities. The selection is based on the personal knowledge of the Trustees.
On appointment new Trustees are given copies of the original Trust Deed and of the latest Annual Report and Accounts. There is no formal induction and training programme, but individual Trustees attend seminars to update themselves when they feel it necessary.
The Trust has six sub-committees covering Allotments, Almshouses, Creeting & Camping Land, Finance, Grants and Minibus, all of which report to and make recommendations to the main committee.
